July Featured Artists: Alex Mitchell and Lullwater

Alex Mitchell

An up-and-coming performer quickly gaining attention for his creativity and improvisational skill, Alex Mitchell is pushing the limits of what the violin can do. Armed with a 5-string NS Designs CR5 and a host of guitar effects, Alex forms his compositions around the concept of looping and delay, in which parts are layered to create the illusion of multiple instruments. At times he sounds like a deep cello, a multi-octave ensemble, a screaming guitar, or a soothing synthesizer - all out of one instrument, all live.

Alex has performed at Carnegie Hall (solo), the Kennedy Center, Constitution Hall (to a crowd of 3,000), the Canadian Embassy, the German Cultural Center in New York, Don Hill's (a known rock venue), at a concert in Salzburg, Austria for Mozart's 250th Birthday, the Palladium in McLean, Disneyworld, and at several small venues and private events in Manhattan and Virginia. He also performed at local elementary and middle schools to inspire a younger generation into continuing the violin.

In addition, he was the first violinist in a working classical string quartet that regularly played weddings, art shows, and conferences around the D.C area for a couple of years.

Several of Alex's live performances on YouTube have received over 200,000 views (as of this writing) and given him international recognition by a small but supportive fan base. After the YouTube videos started getting attention, he was contacted by quite a few people asking for higher quality recordings. In the summer of 2007 he recorded a low-budget album, "Evolution," and released it on iTunes. It sold a lot better than he ever thought it would, and he used the money from that album to finance a new EP, "Intercosm," that was professionally mastered and released in August 2008. He is currently seeking a label for his next major release.

Alex was accepted at Berklee College of Music, but after reviewing financial concerns, he chose to pursue his music in New York City while attending Fordham University.

Since moving to New York, Alex is now affiliated with the PUMP NY management firm and the Original Sessions booking agency.

Lullwater

Named for the street address of the basement where the band first began, Lullwater is an up beat alternative/ modern rock band with a large array of originals and covers.  Having just released their debut album, Faithful Sinners, the guys of Lullwater are promoting the album and connecting with fans. This premier album shows the diversity of Lullwater’s music and talent.  From folk/acoustic rock to some heavier melodic modern rock riffs. There is a unique sound that appeals for all kinds of music lovers, and that is portrayed in Lullwater's music.

Created in Athens, Lullwater played its first show at DT’s Downunder, and has since played venues in the musically inclined city of Athens and all over the southeast. Lullwater released its debut album faithful Sinners in 2008, which was recorded with Asa Leffer and Eric Friar in DARC studios. Lullwater will be releasing its new EP "Forest For The Trees" in the summer of 2009.

Lullwater is heavily influenced by 90's rock and Classic rock of the 1970's. The band brings a different sound to the stage with strong vocals, intense and melodic guitar solos, and solid/powerful percussion. 

The band is led by frontman John Strickland who heads up the vocals and guitar.  Brett Strickland (no relation to John) displays his virtuosic style on lead guitar and Nick Thomas handles drums and percussion.  The newest member of the band is Carter Jones who has taken over the bass guitar.

Lullwater released their debut album Faithful Sinners in January 2008. It is a full length album with 10 tracks.
While recording the title track of the album, “Faithful Sinners,” John Neff of the Drive By Truckers caught wind of the sound, and consequentially graced that song with his amazing pedal steel guitar. Another outstanding musician, Drew Carman, also played exceptional banjo on Faithful Sinners.

"Forest For The Trees" is Lullwater's brand new EP that will be released in the summer of 2009. The album consist of gritty rock (A Forgotten Name) to folk rock (Whatever Happened) to Alternative Rock (Alive). The band is extremely proud of this new album and is touring to promote it.

The Brymers band is a five piece rock-n-roll group from the 1960's known for its fuzz guitar, pounding harp, hammond B3, and melodic harmonies.  The group's influences were The Kinks, The Byrds, the Stones, and The Allman Brothers. the Brymers are known for their 60's classic hit of "Sacrifice."  The Brymers have three CD's on the market and over 90 recorded tracks in their catalog that cover all genres.  Visit: www.thebrymers.com or call 541.683.2263.

Akasha is a rock band formed in San José, Costa Rica in 2002. Guitarist Emmanuel Sotela founded the band, and shortly after guitarist Roberto Artavia joined in. Later, after trying out and playing with various musicians, lead vocalist Julio Nájera, bass player and background vocals Manuel Villalobos and drummer Narayan Barrantes joined Akasha to complete a line-up they we are all happy with and most importantly, that was effective playing their unique style of rock. In only five years the band has grown, accomplished many goals, and has participated in over 100 concerts, both national and international. Towards the beginning, in 2003, they participated in a tour entitled “El Ciclo de los Grandes” (Cycle of the Great), where only the most recognized bands in the country were included (all bands that played exist since the early 90’s, yet Akasha, founded only a year before, was the only new band that had reached the level required to participate). Also in 2003, the band participated in two music festivals called “Feria Rock” (Rock Fair), and again, Akasha was the only relatively new band that was included. Finally towards the end of the year, the band played in a concert called “Festival Panamericano 2003” which is held every year in Latin America’s most recognized business school, (INCAE Business School) with more that 5000 people in attendance. In 2004, the band exclusively dedicated their time to compose new material and worked to polish existing songs, playing in only local gigs to try out the material and keep active. In 2005, when they formally came back to the stages, Akasha was hired by one Latin America’s most important brand names (“Ron Flor de Caña”), to play three large concerts in Nicaragua which were a great success. After returning to Costa Rica, Akasha (for the second time) was one of four bands that played in the “Festival Panamericano 2005”. Recently, in November 2006, Akasha won first place in a contest, with over 80 bands participating, organized and sponsored by one of the largest breweries in Latin America (the Argentinean “Quilmes”). This brought them a contract offer from Alejandro Taranto, one of Latin America’s most recognized managers and producers (he worked with highly acclaimed bands such as Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and A.N.I.M.A.L.), to distribute their new album throughout South America. Currently Akasha has offers for a tour in Guatemala and is awaiting confirmation for a tour in South America to promote their album, Descriptar. On February 28, a short documentary based on the recording process of the album, press conference, and Q&A with fans was broadcasted on national television, along with the music video for the first single, Cartas Marcadas. The Album: Descriptar Akasha is currently promoting their first album titled Descriptar, which was released on March 15, 2007. The album was recorded in August-September of 2006 with producer Jesse Alvarado in Audio Arte Studios, the most important recording studio in the country, mixed at Sonic Response Studios (Los Angeles) and mastered in World Class Audio (Los Angeles). The record consists of 11 tracks (8 songs and 3 interludes), including Estatuas de Sal (Salt Statues), Arrodillados en la Sombra (Kneeling in the Shadows) and Cartas Marcadas (Tainted Letters), the first single that reached radio stations on February 15. Their first music video began rotating in music television on February 28 and was a instant hit. Currently Akasha just finished a tour called the Costa Bazooka with US producer Bruce La Pierre, alonside of various bands, including the grammy nominated Turning Point from Texas, Ionia and Stereopath from New York, Endway and Death by Fame from Boston and Before the Fall from Dallas. Akasha will be touring the US in May of 2008 playing dates in Boston, Texas and New York, and also playing the In Rock We Trust show in upstate NY. They are also expected to play in late of 2008 the Locobazooka show. Kim Campbell

Biography
Listen and singer/songwriter, Kym Campbell, will draw you into her world with music most often described as acoustic surf-roots. The twenty seven year old evokes an innocent, yet sophisticated and upbeat sound, sharing with us all her experiences of life as a girl, a woman, a lover, a joker, and most of all – that little surfie chick from next door. As an acoustic artist, her unique vocal style, uplifting lyrics and catchy guitar riffs create a distinct and alluring style being likened to artists such as Jack Johnson or Tristan Prettyman. But it is her well crafted songs themselves that have drawn the most attention with Kym’s recently released debut album being chosen as the featured soundtrack for Australian Longboarding Magazine's 'Project X', as well as being included on ‘SoundsLikeCafe’s new compilation CD, which is distributed and played in over 1200 cafes nationwide, featuring some of Australia’s most highly regarded musicians. With numerous community radio stations around Australia embracing her newly released independent album and voted top 30 New Artists To Radio, as well as consistently staying in the Top 30 Australian Myspace artists for the genres of both roots and surf and the Top 10 acoustic artists on MP3.com.au, the songstress has built herself an impressive fan base.

Kym has been influenced by a kaleidoscope of genres from reggae to folk, roots flowing to easy surf-rock, with even a hint of hip hop. And out of this combination, she has crafted her own distinct style, while still managing to include just enough radio friendly pop to keep that tune popping up in your head all day. Names like Ben Harper, Tristan Prettyman, the Waifs, Bob Marley, Jack Johnson, The Beautiful Girls and Sublime, are just a few she draws any particular special inspiration from.  With Kym  complementing her laidback guitaring with some harmonica and a sweet little ukulele, her live performances are winning hearts across Australia. Having supported acoustic rock and roots bands in the United States, Kym is now back in Australia to stay and you can find her playing at a number of niche venues and roots festivals around Australia. With her debut album newly released you are going to want to keep your eye out for this up and coming talent!

Biography
Country/Folk/Roots. Uniquely personal sound reminiscent of the college coffee houses that were his beginning.  Moving quickly to a lead guitarist for popular regional bands  OH (Eli Radish,Buckeye Buckeroos),  CO (Airborne, Emersom Biggins), David Alan Coe, Kennedy has toured and traveled, sometimes with band sometime on a personal journey, capturing all in his compositions.  Most recently performing at music festivals & smaller, intimate venues, the music he plays is his own, whether originals (30+) or unique cover interpretations. Playing  "anything with strings" a lead guitarist accompanied by harmonica & distinctive voice, as comfortable on mandolin & banjo, not shying from keyboard. April 2009 Featured Artists - John Haydon and Don Russian

John Haydon:
Pongid Radio is playing "I Wanna Go Away With You" - and we're looking forward to his new releases.

John Haydon's 5th and most recent release "Phantom Heart" is an achingly beautiful and haunting exploration of the dark, hidden realms of the heart and the happiness found in love. The listener can't help but feel that Haydon has transformed a very personal dark night of the soul into a bitter-sweet collection of songs that shine with ageless beauty. Fans will be interested to know that two thirds of the songs were written as "hidden-message love letters" during the formation of a band with another songwriter that he fell in love with (a short documentary about the album

called "Song Stories" will be available at www.johnhaydon.com). The songs resonate with poetic sensibility and naked honesty conjuring up the ghosts of Leonard Cohen, Neil young and John Lennon.

For the past 13 years, Haydon has been developing an honest and direct, yet refined songwriting voice. Each song is a balancing see-saw with loneliness and despair on one end and hope and determination on the other end. His previous record "She's Gone" (on iTunes) was released  in 2002 and received rave reviews in major music publications in the Northeast.

His musical styles have gone from Pop Rock to Alt-County to Singer/Songwriter to Minimalist Folk reflecting influences that include Badly Drawn Boy, Neil Young, Galaxy 500

, Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash. However, the essential constant thread in his music is what one fan calls "courageous vulnerability".  John adds, "Artists like Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons and Neil Young have always been mentors to me in how they put honesty before anything else in their music. If I can get one thing right, it would be being honest and naked in my music".

No effort was spared making this record. John hand-picked Boston's best including Russell Chudnofsy (Lori McKenna), Mike Piehl (Chris Smither), Steve Chaggaris (Ke

n Clark Organ Trio /The Soul Band) and Margaret Garrett (Mr. Airplane Man). All the songs were recorded at Moontower Studio, Woolly Mammoth Studio and his home studio in Massachusetts. The masterful Pete Weiss (Bow Thayer, Ramona Silver, Lucky 57) mixed everything at Verdant Studio. Finally, Jeff Lipton (Magnetic Fields, Big Star, Jess Klein, Sebadoh) at Peerless mastered the disc.

Don Russian

Jon and Jim Drake are two brothers raised on the likes of Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, The Boss, The Beatles, and The Waterboys (courtesy of father/manager Chuck Drake).  The brothers have been learning and writing together since childhood beginning with a single Yamaha Eterna and a Tascam four track tape recorder.

Years later and armed with beautifully crafted guitars and crunchy distorted tube amps, the Drake brothers became a ttached to other soun ds like early punk rock, garage rock, and art rock/glam rock.. the likes of the Buzzcock s, The Clash, Trail of Blood, Modest Mouse, The Stooges, Kings of Leon, The Teeth, and of course a little Wilco and Neutral Milk Hotel.

With all of these influences the brothers crafted their own sound with a classic guitar, guitar, bass and drums presentation.  Combined with strong song writing and vocal abilities gained through studies both collegiate and independent, the boys have become a force to reckon with.  On top of that, they are backed up by one of the tightest, punchiest rhythm sections around via Jared Olson and Paul Chivari.
 
DON RUSSIAN has been hitting the pavement and perfecting their product for years.  As of today.. there is a steady buzz in the air as the show success continues to grow.  DON RUSSIAN is up and coming and definitely a band to watch.

Featured Artists for March 2009 - +Spanx and Lawrence Cresswell

+Spanx Biography
Soft spoken and withdrawn during early childhood, no one imagined that he'd pursue a career of performance & songwriting.  Attending schools in The West Indies, Japan and various parts of the states, exotic locales like Okinawa and Jamaica helped to shape +Spanx cosmopolitan worldview and love of different cultures and music.
      The eldest of three talented siblings, his father remembers the infant +Spanx (too young yet to walk or speak) humming in tune The National Anthem while being coddled during its repeated performance in a theater.
      As +Spanx showed great promise, his parents later encouraged him to study the cornet which led to a discovery of numerous instruments.  He became proficient on electric bass while performing with Top 40, retro-pop and classic rock groups, also developing a versatile yet powerful vocal which ranges from ballads & barbershop to hip-hop and hard rock... varying stage experiences led +Spanx to fronting the Miami-based trio kNiption FiT, an enigmatic power-pop band "best described as The Monkees meet Rush..."
    +Spanx brainchild evolved over several years as he experimented with many styles and talented musicians, even backing legendary performers like The Ink Spots and The Platters.  kNiption FiT released a self-titled LP followed by another self-released EP of lesser acclaim, although the group had tremendous local success (grand prize\Battle Of The Bands) and a fan base extending far beyond South Florida's music scene... visit groups.msn.com/TheKFanClub
      With desire for more experience, +Spanx dissolved kNiption FiT to focus on a few select projects.  After a brief stint with starring roles in a local theater company, he was invited to record a solo effort in Europe with Joseph LaRossi, a prominent Swedish producer based in Stockholm.  Following a series of song collaborations and performances with his return to the USA, +Spanx won Best Adult Contemporary in an international songwriting contest with a guitar ballad “I Pray (It’s A Mistake)”
        More recently, +Spanx has been commissioned to write the soundtrack for a new educational children's program titled "Dollar Ben" ~ also, his hilarious political spoof “God Luv Ya, G. Dub’ya!” is receiving awards and attention on talk radio and morning shows in several countries.  Alan Roy Scott, co-founder of Unisong International Song Competition wrote, "I was literally on the floor... in fact, the highest compliment I can offer as a veteran songwriter is to say how jealous I am... I wish I'd written this myself..."

Lawrence Cresswell

Reflecting on the landscape, sea & sky Lawrence Cresswell composes and performs acoustic guitar music in the style that can be best described as Contemporary Classical, New Age and instrumental Easy Listening.  His expressions in music draws upon many years of his intimate connections to the outdoor  environment.

Lawrence Cresswell, who hails from Kitchener-Cambridge, Ontario, has played acoustic and classical guitar for over 25 years. He considers himself basically self-taught, despite formal training in theory and performance with the Royal Conservatory of Music and with several private tutors. His personal style of guitar playing draws upon various performance techniques such as rhythm methods and accompaniment styles, although he has come to favour finger-style and methods common to early music.

It is from both the acoustic and classical guitar that Lawrence obtains sincere satisfaction, for he feels they allow him to more fully explore the expressive potential of the instruments, both as a performer and as a composer. While the majority of his own compositions have been written for solo guitar, he has developed arrangements for guitar and flute, violins, cellos, and various sizes of vocal ensembles and choirs.

Featured Artists for February 2009 - Ben Stewart and Linda Enns 80:20

Ben Stewart has performed with and supported many artists, notabley including Pete Murray, the Whitlams, Diesel, Moving Pictures, Bertie Blackman, Iota, Old Man River and Rene Geyer.

He has released 2 albums, In the Absence of Fear (2006) and Social Architecture (2007) and a DVD, 'Microsymphonix: Live @ Yooniq Studios', featuring Ben's songs arranged for string quintet.

Linda Enns was born in Ottawa, Canada, where she took classical piano instruction through the Royal Conservatory. Her work could be described as 'dark, piano-drive indie pop'. She is currently performing live in the band '80:20' with guitarist Mike Jacobs (Heinous Cannibal Starvation), drummer Dave Campbell (Subdwellers, Ol Dominion, Altered States of Funk), and bassist Shaun O'Neil, and is on the verge of releasing the C.D. 'Good Behaviour Days' (hitting local Seattle stores in mid-October, but can currently be purchased on www.lindaenns.com). The album was produced by Joe Reineke of Alien Crime Syndicate at Orbit Audio in Seattle, and features a guest appearance by Joe as well as by the Rococo Blues Horns! "Nevada" - a progressive / eclectic rock band out of Hawthorne, Nevada is the brainchild of singer / songwriter, Zak Domogalla. Their first album "... Of The World" (produced and arranged by multi-Grammy Award Winner / KC and the Sunshine Band co-founder, Richard Finch) is available at www.nevadatheband.com.

No stranger to creating successful music projects, Domogalla released two albums ("Act II" and "Anywhere's Better Than Here") through his former band, "Ode To Nothing," which he founded in late 2005. Domogalla anticipates an even greater success with Nevada's "... Of The World."

Morris Acevedo has performed with an unusual variety of Jazz and Pop artists. In the Boston area, he played with Joshua Redman, Jim Black, Ken Vandermark, the Either Orchestra, the Charlie Kolhase Quintet, organ Trio Be-3 and the Matt Wilson group. In the San Francisco Bay Area performances include Richie Cole's Alto Madness Orchestra, Dam East and various groups lead by Morris. He also spent several years in one of the early incarnations of Charlie Hunter drummer, Scott Amendola's group. Pop music performances include motown / top-40group the Marsels and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in the Boston area. The strangest gigs he has ever had was an acoustic "un-plugged" performance with pop legend Boy George as part of a dance music conference in San Francisco. Last but not least, he's been a proud member of eclectic pop-groups lead by Emily Bezar, Jessie Turner and Noe Venable. The last Bay Area group he played in was vocalist Ann Dyer's quartet.

Allene Rohrer  does not sound like anyone in particular. Perhaps this is due to her early inundation of classical music, old folk songs and African folk and urban music. She was not exposed to popular music until she got her first radio and the ability to control what she listened to when she was 12 years old. While she readily embraced this new music, she never forgot her roots, which can be glimpsed in her beautiful melodic structures and eclectic rhythms. Being outside the box puts Allene in a unique position to appeal to a diverse cross-section of listeners.

She has performed in and contributed songs to San Francisco Bay Area bands The Mean Streaks, The Blue Bloods, Trench, Danger, Thread &The Biddy & Buddy Show. She has also lent her vocal abilities to many other local groups in performance and recordings. Her song writing style encompasses singer-songwriter, pop, folk, rock, country, jazz, and blues. Currently she is performing in Emulating Doris, with Ed Buchanan and Gennui Rafill, and working towards composing for other performers and for film and television.

Allene has two self-releases, Synergism (released November 2001) and Alchemy (released January 2008). She has had a song featured on the E television program Hollywood Nights about the popular Los Angeles nightclub Club Cherry. Her song Eyes (from Alchemy) is part of the soundtrack for the award winning independent short film Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves. Allene’s recent release, Alchemy, was rated number 1 in Zeitgeist’s hottest reviews of January 2008.
